A half hour ferry ride from Perth's Bell Tower or Fremantle port will get you to the small Island called Rottnest. Initially called Rats Nest because of the population of rat like rare Quokka's which exist on the island, un effected by predators on the mainland. One of the most popular tourist spots, Rottnest makes for a fantastic weekend getaway for Perth locals.
